Some songs haunt us. They remind us where we’ve been and hint at where we’re going. It’s a bit like Ocean or Moana, that vast expanse of blue, that mysterious watery highway that connects our islands and people.

MY NAME IS MOANA is an intimate 90-‐minute tribute to the ocean led by singer and songwriter Moana Maniapoto, whose music (so interwoven with NZ identity) has taken her from garage parties in South Auckland to exotic stages around the world.

Using an intoxicating mixture of music, myth and personal anecdotes, we discover and share our relationship to Ocean and with each other.

Haere mai! Let Moana and her talented musicians host you with their own little garage party. Bring your gat or ukulele. Join them for a delightful showcase of sublime singing and captivating storytelling that will draw you in, make you think, feel, laugh, sing along and possibly even dance.

Club Night and Theatre Workshops

Club Night

We had a great night of dress up fun!

We auctioned off some furs, hugged for Lormar, Aana Watts and Rachel Sutherland graced the stage with their singing talent and our treasured treasurer performed her speech "All you need is love"

In the future for Club nights we have brainstormed having flash back viewings of shows from the past and reading scripts for the future. Less of a variety show and more of a chill, chat, catch up and socialise. Watch this space for the possibility of another club night before this year is out.

Theatre Workshops and an Open Night on the horizon

Centre Stage is here to support the community in getting involved in theatre in a fun and social way. Come along to our workshops that are designed to increase our skill base and encourage participation. Our club members run the workshops and pass on their experience and wisdom and enthusiam.

Free to club members. Small cost to those that are wanting to see what we offer without committing as a member.

Adult Theatre Sports Workshop could result in ongoing club being created! Adults need a place to play!

Kids Theatre Sports Workshop was hit with the fabolour Toni Sullivan!!!

Last year our Open nights were a great success! It is a variety show where the community are invited to put on an act and we provide the audience! Last year we had poetry, belly dancing, singing, skits, Shakespeare and lots of other little surprises. If you want to practise your ideas out on stage contact the secretary and get your act in the line up. Or just come along to see it all unfold.

Where the new meets the old, New York City based musician, Dan Bolton is a singer/songwriter/pianist with a unique sound. His songs are 21st Century standards, incorporating elements of jazz, pop and Latin American styles. His music is reminiscent of George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Irving Berlin but with a modern twist.

Dan has recently recorded 3 albums, The New York Sessions, Volumes 1,2 and 3 which he will be featuring in the show.

As part of his New Zealand tour, Dan will be performing at Centre Stage on Friday night, August 19th with New York based drummer, Mark Lockett, Kiwi jazz legend Roger Manins on sax and bassist, Johnny Lawrence (Electric Slide Hustle).

Fresh from graduating a performing arts degree, Taupo native Taylor Griffin returns at the head of his own theatre company Simple Truth Theatre, bringing Toa Frasers award winning BARE to Centrestage for a one night only performance as part of their North Island Tour.

In 1998 Toa Frasers Bare made an impact on the arts scene within New Zealand. It’s a classic kiwi comedy with a hilarious matrix of urban poetry and streetwise lip. 2 Actors – 24 characters rap and riff on body image, films, takeaway food, graffiti and English literature. This contemporary classic has earned its place as an Icon of New Zealand theatre and is even being taught around the country as part of the Drama and English curriculum. It’s a piece involving several different monologues with a wide variety of voices, caricatures, themes and relationships. The two actors take us on a journey through a range of personalities from late 90’s NZ. Gym babes, Skater chicks, Burger King Employees and Shakespeare. Let us take you on a trip down memory lane and experience clashing cultures in this classic New Zealand work.

Her Excellency, Lady Janine Mateparae invited a group of Taupo community groups representing fashion, arts and culture to morning tea at L'Arte Cafe. I went along to represent Centre Stage. I raved about 'With the best Will in the World' and our up coming production of 'Calendar Girls'. It was a great chance to network with awesome like minded creative woman. I'm totally going to Winterfest and the Taupo Fashion Show! so much work goes into these community events. We should support them all.

Centre Stage would like to send out a massive thank you to all those that came along and supported this collection of pieces from Shakepeare. Alma Riley did an amazing job of making Shakespeare fun and accessible to all.

We have received some great feedback via email which I will be sharing here as I receive more.

Margaret and I really enjoyed the show, very well do Alma – Bruce Morrison

Alma Riley's choices of scenes & original interpretation was clever. She has brought superb work out of her cast. It was the most superb of production & made Shakespeare so accessible to everyone, & the front of house staff, the food ,the compere, it all was magnificent. I only wish I could have seen it again.- Gilli Sutton.

Just to let you know I was thrilled to see a poster for the Best Will in the World. The production was superb and it was fantastic to see that Alma had been persuaded to come out of retirement.

Our group of three loved the production. We were left wanting more at each interlude. the quality of everything was excellent and we enjoyed the supper too. A great night out with excellent theatre. – Marilyn Collin-Dawson
